Nueva Andalucía: The Golf Valley at the Heart of Marbella

There are few places on the Costa del Sol where you can step off a championship fairway, drive five minutes to one of Europe's most glamorous marinas, and be home in time to watch the sun drop behind La Concha from your terrace. Nueva Andalucía manages this trick daily, which goes a long way to explaining why Marbella's largest neighbourhood has become one of its most sought-after.

A Valley Shaped by Vision

Nueva Andalucía owes its existence to the Madrid developer José Banús Masdeu, who arrived in Marbella in 1962 and acquired the farming estates stretching between the fishing town and San Pedro de Alcántara. After completing Puerto Banús in 1968, he turned inland, laying out infrastructure across the broad valley that rises towards the Sierra Blanca foothills. The construction of three championship golf courses through the 1970s (Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, Los Naranjos Golf Club, and Aloha Golf Club) gave the neighbourhood its enduring nickname: the Golf Valley.

What Banús created, and what successive decades have refined, is something unusual on this coast: a purpose-built residential area that nevertheless feels organic and established. Mature gardens line wide, quiet streets. Low-rise villas sit behind bougainvillea-draped walls. The density is low, the greenery abundant, and the sense of space generous. Around 18,000 people live here year-round, with that figure swelling considerably in summer.

Situated immediately north of Puerto Banús, where Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, and Benahavís converge, Nueva Andalucía is remarkably central. Marbella's old town lies roughly ten minutes east; San Pedro the same distance west. Málaga Airport is approximately 50 kilometres and 38 min via the AP-7 motorway, while Gibraltar Airport is around 52 min southwest. A car is genuinely useful: the terrain is hilly and the neighbourhood sprawling.

The Courses That Define a Landscape

The three principal golf courses don't merely adjoin the residential streets; they define the landscape, their maintained fairways forming the green corridors around which homes were built. Las Brisas, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and founded in 1968, has hosted two World Cups and three Spanish Opens. Los Naranjos, also a Trent Jones design inaugurated in 1977, is considered one of Spain's finest courses. Aloha Golf Club, designed by Javier Arana, has hosted the Andalucía Open on three occasions.

Beyond the core trio, the nine-hole Magna Marbella Golf and the floodlit Dama de Noche, offering rare night play, sit on the periphery, while La Quinta Golf and Country Club is a short drive towards Benahavís.

Racquet Sports and Active Living

Golf headlines, but the Costa del Sol's deep racquet sports culture is well represented here. The Aloha Tennis and Padel Club in Parcelas del Golf offers hard courts, clay, and padel with qualified coaching. Tennis Brothers Marbella Club, founded by former ATP professionals, has been a family favourite for three decades. The Club Internacional de Tenis and Padel near Puerto Banús provides seven courts across three surfaces.

For families, the Aloha Gardens Multi Sports Club is a standout, offering daily tennis, padel, football, basketball, hockey, and more for children and adults, with popular holiday camps year-round. The nearby Nueva Alcántara Padel and Tennis Club, with 11 padel courts including the only fixed glass court in the world seating 1,500 spectators, is a regional reference for the sport.

Water sports launch easily from Puerto Banús marina (sailing, jet-skiing, and paddleboarding are all available), while hiking and mountain biking trails from Lago de las Tortugas provide a quieter counterpoint in the valley's upper reaches.

Dining and Social Life

Nueva Andalucía's dining scene mirrors its cosmopolitan population. Brasserie Astoria Marbella, opened in 2025 by Björn Frantzén's three-Michelin-star restaurant group, has brought serious culinary credentials to the neighbourhood with a 234-cover terrace. Mosh Fun Kitchen combines fusion cuisine with live entertainment, while Bao Garden offers alfresco Asian-inspired dining in a tropical setting. Fat Mamma Trattoria delivers excellent, unfussy Italian cooking. The Swedish-run La Campana Restaurante on Avenida Miguel de Cervantes offers Scandinavian and international fusion, a nod to the significant Nordic community here.

Centro Plaza, the main commercial hub, houses cafés, restaurants, and daily amenities, while Puerto Banús, just minutes away, opens up everything from chiringuitos to designer dining rooms and beach clubs like Ocean Club Marbella. Residents enjoy both worlds: quiet neighbourhood suppers during the week and the port's more theatrical offerings at weekends.

Education: A Genuine Strength

For relocating families, Nueva Andalucía's educational provision is one of its most compelling attributes. Aloha College, founded in 1982 as a not-for-profit and located within the neighbourhood beside Aloha Golf Club, serves around 875 students aged 3 to 18 from over 60 nationalities. It follows the English National Curriculum through to IGCSE, offering both A-Levels and the IB Diploma on a 30,000-square-metre campus with a FIFA-approved pitch, swimming pool, and arts hall. Forbes Spain has ranked it among the country's top five schools.

Svenska Skolan Marbella, also in Nueva Andalucía, provides Swedish-curriculum education for ages 3 to 12. Swans International School and Laude San Pedro International College are both within easy reach, offering British-curriculum and bilingual pathways respectively.

Healthcare, Security, and Community

HC Marbella International Hospital sits within Nueva Andalucía in the Las Mimosas urbanisation, offering multilingual private care. Hospital Quirón Marbella lies in the town centre, while the public Hospital Costa del Sol, one of the region's best-equipped, is approximately 12 kilometres east. The Centro de Salud La Campana provides local public primary care.

The neighbourhood is widely regarded as one of Marbella's safest. Low-density planning, well-lit streets, and private security across many developments create a genuine sense of calm. Exclusive enclaves such as La Cerquilla and Atalaya Río Verde offer 24-hour gated access.

The population is genuinely international (Scandinavian, British, Dutch, Belgian, and Middle Eastern families alongside Spanish residents), yet local traditions persist. The Feria de Nueva Andalucía takes place each July, typically running Thursday to Sunday in the month's third week, with the traditional alumbrado, live music, and the Domingo Rociero. The Marbella Arena, housed in the beautifully repurposed 1965 bullring with a 5,300 capacity, hosts international concerts and cultural events year-round.

Who Nueva Andalucía Suits

This neighbourhood works for a broad range of residents. Families find the combination of Aloha College, safe streets, and abundant green space genuinely practical. Retirees enjoy the quieter pace without feeling isolated. Remote workers appreciate reliable infrastructure and easy airport access.

Nueva Andalucía is not, however, for those seeking beachfront living: the coast is a short drive rather than a stroll. Nor for those wanting nightlife on their doorstep, though Puerto Banús is close enough to reach and far enough to leave behind. What it offers is something increasingly rare on a coast that has seen rapid development: a mature, well-maintained, genuinely residential community where daily life functions smoothly, where children grow up safely in an international environment, and where the quality of the surrounding landscape (those fairway greens, the mountain backdrop, the Mediterranean glinting below) is woven into every day.
